A moon jar (known as 달항아리 Dalhangari in Korean) is an iconic piece of traditional Korean pottery that originated during the Joseon Dynasty, specifically produced from the late 17th century through the early 18th century. Korean artist Kim Whanki was inspired by its imperfect beauty. The plain white and slightly bluish porcelain glaze features no painted decorations or ornaments. This minimalist design perfectly reflected the values of austerity, purity, and modesty central to the Confucian society of the Joseon period.
Originally, they were simply called "large round jars" and used as utilitarian vessels to store food, grain, liquor, or soy sauce. In the mid-20th century, the famous Korean painter Kim Whanki coined the term "moon jar" because their warm white color and organic shape resembled a glowing full moon.
Korean ceramist Kim Jong Yeong created this beautiful moon jar.
