As part of our Craft Art project, we are proud to welcome ACULI as our first guest. Based in the Verdon region, ceramic duo Lucie Baratelli and Alexandre Caillot continually refine their craft, creating modern, one-of-a-kind pieces in very limited series.
This bowl takes the tianmu (天目) form, named after a type of Chinese bowl popular during the Song dynasty. Inspired by both the graphic Jiaotai ceramics of Tang China and Islamic mosaic glass, the duo works with colored clay (neriage or terre mêlée). They painstakingly color, layer, fold, cut, and reassemble the clay to achieve bold, striking patterns directly within the thickness of the form. Delicate, all-over floral motifs in soft yellow and green give the piece a poetic touch. Like every ACULI creation, it is entirely unique.
